An introduction to the Azure Data Lake and U-SQL

Data is exploding across enterprises. Much of it is semi-structured junk. Or is it junk? What are you going to do with it until you can explore it? Microsoft’s Azure Data Lake is a cloud storage and analytical service for parking a variety of data. When you are ready to discover what is in those files you can spin up the resources you need and run ANSI SQL queries using the U-SQL language. You can join those files to other files and even to SQL Server on Azure in a single query.
After we look at how easy it is to set up a Data Lake we will develop some simple queries against files that I have already loaded into the data lake. We will run a query against a set of files with over 15 GB of data. We will look at the different SQL elements that we are all familiar with (grouping, where clauses) and note the similarities and glaring differences between U-SQL and T-SQL.

Bio: Russ Loski is a local SQL Server developer in the DFW area. He has worked with SQL Server since version 6.5. His passion is finding ways to get information out of a variety of formats from SQL Server to comma delimited files. He is currently working as a contract ETL developer at Baylor Scott & White.

Aug 17: Thinking like a Hacker: A guide to Life, SQL, and Security.

This month, join Brian Guarnieri for colorful anecdotes on how to think like a hacker and use the hacker ethos to fix holes, and see holes you never thought might be there.

Hacking affects everyone and databases hold the keys to the kingdom. What is a business if not it’s data in the 21st Century?

Learn and understand interesting facts, social engineering, hacking, and how a little common sense can save you when your company hemorrhages data. Find out how users made a company a “classless society” one afternoon.

This is an open comedic look at a serious subject and audience participation is both wanted and encouraged. A sense of humor is highly suggested.

So, come join the Fort Worth SQL Server User Group for a comedic look at security, hacking, and how it effects your bottom line day to day.

Meet and Greet: 6:30 PM Presentation(interactive!) begins at 7 PM

What Lurks Beneath your SQL Server : WMI & Error Logs for the Rest of Your Environment with Michael Bourgon

There's far more occurring on your Windows servers than just SQL Server, and looking at ERRORLOG won't show you the whole story: other applications stealing your memory, OS issues, hardware errors, and more. We'll start by looking at different ways to collect Event Logs. From there we'll delve into WMI and WQL, which allow us to query servers (remotely or locally) to get information such as performance statistics, System and Event Logs, and even changes within SQL Server. We'll finish it off with two immediately-usable implementations you can set up on Thursday morning.

	Abstract:

You know that Biml can automate ETL loads, but your data warehouse is several terabytes with a tight load window. In this demo focused presentation, we'll discuss how to use BimlScript to accomplish the following:

		- Dynamically create multiple SISS packages for a data warehouse ETL load, each following a different best practice design pattern.

		- Automatically execute each package multiple times and record the results for analysis.

		- Determine which package version should be used in production.

The only way to be sure that your SSIS packages are performing optimally is to test them against multiple patterns. Make your life easier and let BimlScript do the work for you.

Aug 19 Meeting - SQL Server Unit Testing with Mike Hotek

For those of you that joined us for the warehousing class Mike taught earlier this the year we went through source control, branching & merging, unit testing, code generators and all kinds of great processes. Mike wanted to say more about unit testing than he had time to in the class.

	Topic:

To meet the needs of rapid application development and the rapidly changing needs of the business, your database code needs to be resilient. Even the most resilient code can become incredibly expensive when things break. Catching issues early in a development cycle saves time, money, and a lot of sleepless nights. In this session, we will go over the basics of unit testing using the open source tSQLt framework.

Mike Hotek has lectured, authored and consulted all over the world and is currently the Business Intelligence Architect at Six Flags. He has enabled a huge variety of companies in numerous industries with SQL Server tools since before it was a Microsoft product (long time). After authoring 10 SQL Server books, he not going to Disney World. Six Flags is more fun.

April 15 Meeting - Tim Mitchell: Managing Data Quality In SSIS

Managing data quality should be a part of every enterprise data management strategy, and a key component of that is the detection and resolution of bad data during the ETL process. As the primary data movement and transformation tool in the Microsoft data management stack, SQL Server Integration Services is often the central point of administration for data quality. In this session, I'll demonstrate some methods for detecting and fixing bad data using SSIS using native tools, scripting, and SQL Server Data Quality Services (DQS) integration.

Three Saturdays of Class: Real World Data Warehouse Build : Feb 28th, March 7 th & 14th

We're switching up the format for the first quarter of 2015. We're trading three monthly meetings for three full training days!

Mike Hotek is donating more time to the local SQL Community by teaching the class. Other people are donating their time and efforts to facilitate space and the rest of the event.

We're not charging for the class, but we are accepting donations to off set the monthly meeting costs.

We're here to be a part of a professional learning community, not to sell you something. But having said, that, please do sign up HERE as seating is limited.

We'll be meeting three Saturdays in a row from 9 AM to 5 PM on Feb 28th, March 7 th & 14th.

Be sure to thank Mark as we will be in our usual location for the class.
