      <title>Querying Semistructured Data in Azure Data Lake with USQL</title>

 <a href="https://www.meetup.com/Fort-Worth-SQL-Server-Users-Group/events/253620005/"><B>FWSSUG MEETUP</B></a> page!
<BR><BR><B>Abstract:</B><BR>
Data is exploding across enterprises. Much of it is semi-structured junk. Or is it junk? What are you going to do with it until you can find out? Microsoft’s Azure Data Lake is a cloud storage and analytical service for parking a variety of data. When you are ready, you can query that semi-structured data using an ANSI SQL language called U-SQL. In this session I will demonstrate the similarities and differences between U-SQL and T-SQL. I will demonstrate how easy it is to build a query against 21 GB of CSV files. Such queries can help you determine whether you have a gold mine in your data or a bunch of garbage before investing in a full data warehouse build.
<BR>We will go beyond simply extracting data from CSV files. We will look at how easy it is to gain greater insight from your data using U-SQL and Microsoft’s Cognitive Services. We will also look at how to extract data from JSON files using U-SQL.

He has continued to develop applications connected to all of the versions of SQL Server since. His clients have ranged from insurance to healthcare, from movie theaters to American football. Russ is a regular speaker at SQL Saturday events, as well as the SQL Server Users Groups in the North Texas region. Russ likes working with data in various shapes. He has used DTS, SSIS, U-SQL, R, and .Net to process XML, CSV and other file formats.

<BR><BR><B>Abstract:</B><BR>
You can't wait to move your databases to an Azure PaaS offering so you don't have to patch and maintain an operating system and SQL Server. You looked at Azure SQL DB, but there are some limitations that prevent you from migrating to this service. Don't worry, you're not stranded. There is a new option designed to "Lift and Shift" your workload to Azure PaaS. It's a brand new offering that just came out of private preview and into public preview. We'll discuss this new offering, its advantages, and how you can migrate with ease.

      <title>Security, Hypocrisy, and Standards, "OH MY" or How to hack your data center in three easy steps</title>

<BR><BR><B>Abstract:</B><BR>
How secure do you think your data is? Why is everyone trying to get your data? How do you get a Comptroller of a large bearing supplier to be your puppet and do things they would never do? Hacking....Hacking....And more hacking.
An introduction to situational awareness, on premise security, and social engineering. Learn the secrets of a pen tester and how they get your data. (Answer: it's Usually not through SQL Server.)
Trust no one and ummmm always keep your protractor ready. (See Paranoia Role-playing Game). The chances are you've already been hacked and you don't even know it. Take a humorous journey through the eyes of an everyday DBA who sizes up weaknesses using tried and true Red Team hacking techniques. Lets face it. The data is where the money is. It's not in the snazzy new middle-ware that Bob the programmer is so proud of. It's in your data and sometimes your co-worker is your worst enemy. Remember never blame your self, always always blame the PROGRAMMER. It's Bob's fault!
<BR><BR>
<B>AutoBiography:</B>
<BR>
Brian Guarnieri is a man of mystery. Does anyone know this person. One part human two parts whovian. He's sleek silent and subtle as a brick to the face. An IT professional since 2000 working as a DBA and moonlighting as a super hero. The only database oriented member of the Dallas Hackers Association he spreads his message of governance and coding practices to the masses. Once a leader of a cult, he has put away his Elvis wig, rhinestones, and snazzy shoes to talk about the comical eccentricities of the IT World. You may know him from such television shows as "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "Small Wonder". Once a child actor he now revels in obscurity. As the only Dalek DBA he seeks to exterminate poor code in all its many forms.

<BR><BR><B>Abstract:</B><BR>
A theoretical discussion on the topic of graphical data modeling using enterprise modeling tools.
<BR><BR>
Discuss why we model data, the different modeling type, and different modeling techniques. Explore why and when to use different modeling techniques. Explain dimensional modeling when developing data warehouses, SSAS Cubes, and Power BI Analytics.
<BR><BR>
Sample model diagrams will be used to explain these different modeling techniques and try to bring a more tangible aspect to the theoretical aspects of the discussion.

<BR><BR><B>Abstract:</B><BR>
We will look at how to gather performance-tuning data, review of the SQL Server Internals and where the wait stats are collected and how to use them to determine what changes can be made to increase performance.
<BR>
The Why “it Depends” is always a good starting point and where to look for setup areas to check / review. We will discover where SQL Server hides its information in public. We will only be looking at the SQL Server engine and its components.

      <title>Using Extended Events to Expose Application Performance Issues</title>

<BR><BR><B>Abstract:</B><BR>
When an application is performing poorly, the database is almost always suspected to be the source of the problem. Not so fast! In this session, learn how to use Extended Events to analyze the space BETWEEN calls to the SQL Server. This non-traditional technique can help you to identify where an application is actually the source of a performance issue and not the SQL Server.

<BR><BR><B>Abstract:</B><BR>
For years, SQL Server Reporting Services chugged along with very few updates. Although it remained a reliable and popular reporting tool, the feature set largely remained unchanged for a decade. With the release of SQL Server 2016, everything changed. Microsoft delivered a brand new SSRS. This session will review and demonstrate the new features of SQL Server Reporting Services 2016. You'll walk through the essential changes in SSRS, from the new report manager to the new visualizations. You'll also discuss the SSRS ecosystem and how it fits together with PowerBI and other Microsoft reporting/analytics platforms.

<B>Abstract: </B>
For SQL Server folk comfortable with relational data, XML is an unavoidable evil. SQL doesn't work on it, and nested substrings are awkward, so how can we shred it?
<BR>
In this presentation I cover the basics of handling XML. I briefly review what XML is, and point out where we commonly see it. I show basic XPath, touch on XQuery, and spend the bulk of my time demoing the main methods in T-SQL for applying XPath to XML.
<BR>
Bonus topics include XML schemas (and why they actually matter), XML indexes, and a CLR demo.

<I><B>Abstract:  </I></B><BR>
Query performance is what it is all about. SQL Server 2014/2016 now has the new in-memory functionality that takes a completely different approach to data access and manipulation. This session will consolidate the relevant information from all these sources so the production DBA/Developer will be able to understand, create, use, maintain, and trouble-shoot in-memory table functionality. This session will also examine several demo scripts showing performance gains using the in-memory tables with and without columnstore indexes over equivalent disk based tables. This session is all about when and how to apply in-memory tables in a production environment. After this session you will 1. Understand what in-memory tables are and how to create and maintain them including their limitations 2. Be able to identify performance gains over equivalent disk back tables 3. Comprehend the new data monitoring needed for in-memory table

<I><B>Abstract:  </I></B><BR>
SSIS was originally designed to work in a world where all data was structured and on premise. As modern enterprise data projects increasingly move online, tools like Azure Data Factory (ADF) can extend SSIS capabilities to the cloud. Azure Data Factory is a flexible and powerful cloud based ETL service, but it doesn't replace the functionality of SSIS. <BR>
In this session you will learn the advantages and disadvantages of both ETL platforms; how to use both in tandem to maximize productivity; and how both ETL platforms, as well as any supporting structures, can be automatically generated with Biml Script. <BR>
All of the code used in this presentation can be downloaded by attendees, customized, and used in their production environments.
